All-New Mitsubishi Outlander Breaks Cover, Lineup will Include a Plug-in Hybrid Variant

Just a little over two months after Mitsubishi teased the new Outlander with the second iteration of its Concept PX-MiEV at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, the Japanese company lifted the wraps off the production model that will make its world premiere at the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show in early March.

Even though we only get a single picture from Mitsubishi, it's easy to see that the all-new Outlander is almost a carbon copy of the PX-MiEV II right down to the design of the alloy wheels.

This doesn't mean that there aren't differences over the study but that they are limited to details such as the conventional headlamp units, exterior mirrors and door handles while Mitsubishi also added a pair of fog lamps up front.

Mitsubishi to Say Sayonara to its European Production Facility at the End of 2012

The current economic climate being what it is in Europe, it’s no surprise that most car manufacturers see demand for their products waning. Mitsubishi is one of them, with its European sales dropping from 340,000 in 2007 to 218,000 units last year.

The Japanese manufacturer's only European assembly plant is the NedCar factory in the Netherlands. It was established in 1991 as a joint venture between Mitsubishi, Volvo and the Dutch government. It produced the Carisma and S40/V40 and, subsequently, the Space Star.

Watch a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO hit Black Ice and Almost Crash in West Virginia Pile Up [NSFW]

The first major snowfall of the season brought along bad news for some 30 drivers that were involved a multi-car pileup along the West Virginia Turnpike on Monday.

One of the luckier and perhaps more skilled drivers in a modded Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VIII captured some of the accidents on his dashboard camera when his car stepped on black ice and almost lost complete control of the AWD model - at which point, he repeatedly makes use the "F" word, hence the NSFW warning.

Britain gets New Special Edition of 2012 Mitsubishi Shogun SUV

It has only been about two months since Mitsubishi launched the Shogun (known as the Pajero and Montero in other markets) in a mildly tweaked form for the 2012 model year in the UK, but the Japanese carmaker has already announced the presentation of a new special edition model called "Black" with enhanced exterior styling.

The name stems from the color of the styling details rather than the body itself which is available in a choice of five metallic hues including Frost White (solid), Cool Silver (metallic), Diamond Black (pearlescent), Orient Red (metallic) and Granite Brown (metallic).

Report: Mitsubishi to Launch Electric Light Truck and Plug-in Hybrid Outlander in 2013

According to a report from Japan's Nikkei business daily, Mitsubishi is developing a pure-electric light truck that will be launched onto the market in the second quarter of 2013.

Tokyo Motor Show: Mitsubishi's Concept PX-MiEV II Plug-in Hybrid SUV [Updated]

At the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show that runs from November 30 through December 11, Mitsubishi unwraped the second generation of its Concept PX-MiEV, which brings the study a little closer to production.

Believed to preview the looks and possibly an alternative powertrain option for the next generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander, the Concept PX-MiEV II is a follow up to the PX-MiEV study displayed at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show.

On the outside, there are some minor styling changes such as the higher roofline, larger mirrors, plus more conventional looking alloy wheels, lights and bumper designs, all of which suggest that the PX-MiEV II is pointing to the styling of the next Outlander.

New Mitsubishi Mirage is a No Frills - Low Cost Entry in the Small Car Segment

You'd think that with the rise of the Korean auto industry, a troubled Japanese carmaker like Mitsubishi would up its game and even take some risks to gain a competitive edge.

Instead, Mitsubishi goes and creates the Mirage – quite possibly, the most bland looking city car in the market today…

But perhaps that was Mitsubishi's plan all along […] as the company claims that the design of the small subcompact model "was focused on compactness, affordability, and high fuel efficiency in order to fit the needs of emerging markets as an affordable entry-level model as well as needs of advanced markets for fuel efficiency and low-CO2 emission."

Rally Edition: From Hip, Hip Hurray to…Crash in a Blink of the Eye

As much as we'd like to think otherwise, you never know what's waiting for you around the next corner, as from one moment to the other, your perfect drive can go from stunner to bummer.

During a recent rally in Poland, the driver of a Mitsubishi Colt hatchback was coming fast on a narrow road when some spectators loudly cheered for him the precise moment he passed by.

We don't know if the driver was distracted or not, but a split second later his ride came to an abrupt end when he whammed into a brick fence. Hop over the break to watch the video for yourself.

Mitsubishi Releases New ASX Black Special Edition for British Market

Porsche has one. Mercedes-Benz has one. Even Mazda and GM Australia's Holden have one. And now Mitsubishi gets its own Black edition model as well – at least for the UK market.

The ASX Black Edition is Mitsubishi's newest offering in Britain, with the crossover being available for order now.

The black designation in the special edition ASX's name is justified on the outside by the satin black styling kit which includes black 17-inch alloy wheels, roof, spoiler, mirrors, grille and fog lamp bezels, and on the inside, by a black leather kit featuring carbon fibre inserts.

Mitsubishi President Confirms Next Lancer Evo with Hybrid Powertrain, May be Combined with a…Diesel!

Perhaps the Maya were right and the world will come to an end in December 2012. In which case we’ll never get the chance to see what a Lancer Evolution hybrid-diesel looks like in 2015.

But let's take it from the beginning. The hybrid part of the story is not just another one of those crazy rumors that pop up on the net. In fact, it is as official as it gets since it comes from the mouth of Mitsubishi president, Osamu Masuko.

Masuko revealed to British magazine Autocar that the next generation of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo will ditch the regular 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit, which has become a mainstay of the 10 previous versions, in favor of a hybrid powertrain.

Sleepers, Creepers: VW Beetle GTO - Yes, it's Another Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 Engine Swap

While looking for information on the Russian Fiat Coupe with the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 drivetrain the other day, we found this customized Volkswagen Beetle sporting the same 6g72 twin turbocharged V6 engine.

However, this time, the Japanese powerplant was mounted behind the front seats of the classic Beetle with power being directed to the rear wheels only through a modified version of the Mitsubishi coupe's gearbox.

The VW 1302 GTO was built in Norway and it appears to be an ongoing project. You can get a taste of what it looks and sounds like in the videos below.

Mitsubishi Announces New 1.8-liter MIVEC Engine with Auto Stop & Go System

Italian Sushi: Fiat Coupé Conversion with a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 1,000HP V6 and AWD

Let's just imagine you're faced with this problem: You love the Fiat Coupe's punk rock styling but don't feel the same for its front-wheel drive layout. On the other hand, you're crazy about the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4's potent and technologically advanced powertrain but can't stand its notoriously bland looks.

We'll assume that any logical person would try to find an answer by looking into another vehicle, but not these guys. Welcome to insane tuning world of Russia's Totalcar that decided to create a vehicle that promises to deliver the best of both worlds.

We're still short on the full details as this is an ongoing project, but here's the skinny: the Russian tuner took the Mitsubishi's 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine and all-wheel drivetrain and somehow managed to fit it all under the beautiful body of the Chris Bangle-designed (yes, the same person who styled the BMW E65 7-Series) 1990's Fiat Coupé.

POLL: Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Which is the Most Beautiful of All?

The results of a collaborative project between two or more automotive partners can vary deeply, depending on how far the participating companies are willing to take the rebadging process.

For example, the differences between the original Fiat Doblo and GM's Opel Combo spinoff (a RAM variant will also be introduced in early 2013) are more or less limited to the design of their front bumpers.

The French PSA Peugeot Citroën group on the other hand, gave its designers a little more breathing room when it came to the development of its new compact SUVs / crossovers, the Peugeot 4008 and the Citroën C4 AIRCROSS.

Mitsubishi to Co-Develop Wireless EV Charging System, Wants to Make Plugs Obsolete

ACEA, the European car manufacturers’ association, is pushing carmakers to adopt a common standard for charging their plug-in vehicles. And that’s a noble goal, since it will reduce complexity and costs and will eliminate many of the EVs restrictions.

The association's proposal, however, may be too little, too late. Mitsubishi has teamed up with IHI and WiTricity to develop an easily deployable wireless charging system for electric vehicles, eliminating the need for plugs and cords.
